This suburb features amongst Grahamstown’s best, situated on the right-hand side of the Cradock road as one drives into Grahamstown, on the western side of town. The suburb stretches from Milner street on its eastern border to the Old Quarry in the west.
The beauty of Westhill is its proximity to the three private schools, St Andrews Prep, DSG and St Andrews College. The Chancellor of Rhodes University also has his residence in Westhill and it is just a stone throw from the University.
This is an established suburb with lovely trees and stately old homes. Westhill generally boasts some of the larger stands in Grahamstown. The properties all have lovely gardens and here, too, there are very few vacant stands available.
In the 1830s Grahamstown had grown to be the largest City after Cape Town. When Diamonds were found in Kimberly and gold found on the Rand this changed and growth slowed. When the schools were established in the late 1800’s and Rhodes University in early 1900, beautiful homes were built in the area.
There are many lovely examples of Colonial Victorian, English Gothic and Revivalist architecture. St Andrews College Chapel in Westhill was designed by Sir Herbert Baker an example of Romanesque Style. William White Cooper a Grahamstown architect designed the DSG, the style being a merge of Victorian and Gothic Revival and can be recognised by the red brick inlay detail. In West Hill one can see stately villas where there are fine examples of Gothic and Baroque Styles.
